BIRKENGREN-SMITH: MARY MADELYN

It is with deep sadness we announce the passing of Mary Madelyn Birkengren-Smith (nee Young) at the age of 96 on August 1, 2021, at Huronview Home, Clinton. Madelyn was born in Goderich, to Alexander Young and Mary Alice Carbert. Predeceased by daughters Katherine and Janet Bridgewater and siblings Dorothy Cameron and Rita Arthur as well as husbands Nicholas Birkengren and Arthur Smith. Loving mother to Cheryl (James) Drummond, Brian (Jean) Bridgwater, Patricia (Michael) Walsh. Cherished grandmother to 8 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and 8 great-great grandchildren. Madelyn’s career entailed many years working with ophthalmologists and at the age of 50, Madelyn went back to school to train to be an ophthalmic assistant. She worked as an ophthalmic assistant for Dr. White, Dr. Bateman and Dr. Rombaugh. Madelyn also performed glaucoma testing at St. Mary’s hospital for many years. Madelyn was also a dedicated volunteer at the hospital for 25 years. The family would like to thank the staff of Huronview Home for their care and compassion provided to Madelyn and family throughout the past two years. Donations to St. Mary’s Hospital - Kitchener would be appreciated by the family. There will be a funeral service for Madelyn, and you are welcome to join us online to celebrate her life and faith by streaming her service.
